QUAYAQUIL (Duran) to YAGUACHI SECTION

To start your trip to Ecuador travel Lan Chile who are one of the best airlines in the world...

And travel in absolute comfort with excellent food as this picture of the webmaster shows.

Guayaquil is across the river from its other half Duran where the railway terminated. They are now connected by a bridge but in old days ferries and train ferries did the trip. The ferries are now retired and parked in the railway yard to rot away as seen here. The railway terminal is like a ghost town with everything just left as there is no passenger service anymore from here.

However there is one serviceable Autoferro No. 3 which in this case is a Bluebird Botar Bus Body on a Detroit Diesel 6L53 engined chassis built in the ENFE workshops about 1992 and which I was fortunate enough to be able to ride to Yaguachi on a special trip. In the background is the steam engine No. 11 also serviceable which accompanied us to Yaguachi about 20 km up the line.

The rear of the autoferro - well what can you say? Seen here going through the streets of Duran for the first time in probably a year.

No. 11 is in reasonably good shape here getting up steam for her first trip in a year or so.

On the tender the brakeman has his "clear the road" flag. The livery is interesting as even though it is called ENFE today nowhere does this appear on the equipment - and rightly so as this looks a lot better.

Proceeding through the streets of Duran the roof started filling and heaven knows where they came from. Everyone came out to look at what to them could only be a ghost train and to wave. Ecuadorians are extremely friendly..

Flower sellers sell by the roadside.

A whole family comes to wave...

As do people at the level crossings.

Even the local taxi stops and waves.

A view of No. 11 approaching the crossing of the road. .

Because it was the first trip for moons and traffic would not believe it existed the train was protected on the crossing by no less than six motor cycle police.

On our way again even the top of the loco tender is full of people and there were even people riding on the steam engine pilot - me too, later!

A stop to check the loco.

Approaching Yaguachi on the river bridge which visibly sagged under the train.

In Yaguachi we passed moving shops.

Bicycles are a major method of transport.

Turning on the wye.

At the station in Yaguachi.
